The Mátra wine region is one of the most scenic regions of Hungary. It is the second largest wine region in terms of vineyard (7,500 hectares). Winemaking goes back more than 1,000 years! Historically the region has been influenced by Communism and state-owned vineyards. The government owned vineyards were privatized and today the region accounts for 40% of all wine exported from Hungary. Amongst these big producers we find small, family operated wineries, which focus is on high quality and terroir expressing wines.
