Barcza Winery

Description / History

Our winery is situated on Somló hill, 40 km-s to the north of lake Balaton. This hill is a dormant volcano, mostly made out of basalt. Somló has a particularly robust terroir which is outstanding even amongst the volcanic wine regions, its wines are very rich in minerals. Somló’s uniqueness has been recognized all over the world, we are visited frequently by journalists and sommeliers from Europe and overseas.

Viticulture and the art of making wine runs in our family since the 1800’s. Wine related tasks assigned by the former Religious Foundation were carried out by my great-great-grandfather and his brother. They were the first qualified winemakers of this region. Continuing this tradition, we sell bottled wines since 2011. We have 4 acres of volcanic infield, and even though we are not registered bio farmers, we cultivate our grapes organically. We do not use selected yeast, all our processes are natural and we only use spontaneous fermentation.

We cultivate ancient Hungarian vine verieties that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. These are the furmint, juhfark, hárslevelű (Feuille de Tilleul) and olaszrizling (Welschriesling).

Some of our wines have been chosen to be amongst the nation’s greatest. Our wines are sold in the best restaurants. 3 out of the 4 Michelin-star restaurants in Budapest (Borkonyha, Costes, Costes Downtown) offered wines from Barcza Winery.

We also put great emphasis on hospitality. We welcome our guests in one the hill’s highest wine cellar, right at the bottom of the basalt columns, where you can enjoy the view and taste our wines. Our winery is right next to the “Kőkonyha” (Stone kitchen) basalt formation.
